IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

Plans for this Friday, September 7th

I have rescheduled my trip to New York for the first week of October. My grandmother passed away this morning, so I will not be able to stay with you very long on Friday because I am attending her funeral that day.

RICHARD HULL will be my substitute this Friday, and our first Guest Artist in the class. We will meet him at the painting location and then I will leave you and go to the funeral. Richard will be in charge of the class.

I need one more person to volunteer as a driver to pick up a minivan at BYU vehicle rental at 8:45 Friday morning, pick up the class at the HFAC parking lot, drive them to and from the location, and return the van after class. So far Josh T. and Mitchell E. have volunteered to drive. Any takers for the third van? Let me know.

Below are your instructions for Friday. Please let me know if you have any questions.

1. Bring your PORTABLE outdoor painting gear ready to go painting on location in oils or watercolor/gouache. (No acrylics; iPad painting is acceptable, but traditional media is encouraged.)

Basic primaries and browns:
Titanium White
Cadmium Yellow Light
Alizarin Crimson
Ultramarine Blue
Transparent Oxide Red (or Burnt Sienna)

Double-primaries:
Cadmium Yellow Lemon (or Azo yellow)
Cadmium Red
Cerulean Blue

Recommended secondaries and earth tones:
Viridian Green
Sap Green
Yellow Ochre
Raw Sienna
Cadmium Orange
Terra Rosa
Dioxazine Purple
Raw Umber

Recommended oil brushes:
Hog bristle filberts, sizes 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 16
Mongoose or synthetic filberts (and/or flats), sizes 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 16

2. Bring a water bottle and a sack lunch; also a hat, sunscreen long pants, good walking shoes, a stool or portable chair (if you want to sit). If you have a painting umbrella, you might want to use it.

3. Meet by 9:00 a.m. at the HFAC parking lot on the east/northeast curb by the tunnel. Drivers, please pick up the vans at 8:45, drive to the HFAC parking lot, park in the "Service Vehicle" spots (with the white curbs), and meet me and the class there.

4. We will drive to the Provo River Parkway walking trail near 820 N. and Geneva Road in Provo. I will post the exact location info and driving directions here on the blog before Friday, for anyone who needs to join us late.

5. Plan on painting 1-2 studies in the morning, having lunch, and painting 1 more study in the afternoon. You may use a limited palette or full palette. The emphasis should be on VALUE and COMPOSITION. Consider cropping your studies to a reasonably small area of your view, but including foreground, middle ground, and background layers to give the sense of deep space. Use value & color transitions to indicate atmospheric perspective.
